The most popular tourist season in Shimla is from March to June, when the weather is quite pleasant and perfect for outdoor activities. The weather from  April to June, i.e. the summer season, varies from  a minimum of 16°C to 28°C. The season features warm days, cold nights and occasional showers of rain. One requires cotton clothes or light woolens in the evenings. Month of May is the most sunny month, while the warmest month is June with an average maximum temperature of 24°C (75°F).

Shimla during these months is alive with green trees around the hills and flowers blooming all over. It is an ideal weather for the tourists to enjoy hiking, paragliding, camping, trekking, rafting, horse riding and many more such activities. Summer Festival too is held during this time of the year at the Ridge, which is a treat for the tourists as well as the locals.

The rainy season in Shimla begins in July and extends till September. The average annual rainfall in Shimla is about 166 centimeters. The temperature varies from  13°C to 20°C. July is the wettest month and travel should be avoided as Shimla is prone to landslides due to heavy rains.

Although the weather in Shimla in monsoon months is not congenial to venture out very far or indulge in outdoor activities. But you can explore the museums, temples, cafes and restaurants. Many come here to experience the breathtaking misty views during the rainy reason. When the fog is dense you would like to get lost in numerous walking trails exploring your way around. It is truly magical and a great experience all together.  Do carry along a light jacket as despite the humidity, Shimla remains cool during the monsoons. Winter in Shimla begins in November and extends till February when the temperature drops to -7°C and maximum is 10°C. It gets very chilly and December to January are the coldest months of the season with an average maximum temperature of 9°C (48°F). Cold winds from Himalayas cause snowfall in the region by end of December and one needs to wear heavy woolens or light up fire places to warm oneself.


Tourists throng this place usually in the end of December or closer to the New Year to enjoy skating and skiing in the snow. Shimla Winter Carnival too is organized during this time by the government, which features various cultural events and activities.
